Women in general are not written roles that often that are this complex, so the chance to dive into that was something I couldn't pass up. One thing Joe and I spoke about was this idea that Lizzy is analog in a digitized world. She’s definitely the archetype of the Mother Earth. She’s listening to cassette tapes in a very futuristic facility. Everything, from the costumes to the hair and makeup, was supposed to feel like from a different era, that she didn’t belong in this facility. Not only was she an outsider, but she’s also trying to escape in small ways.

It may seem like her transformation from child star to Hollywood A-lister happened overnight, but it's taken Smollett years of consistency to get where she is today, and it seems to have paid off. She's now considered a role model for scores of women of color, and she has fully embraced her role in Hollywood, along with all of the responsibility that comes with it. While Denise is probably the funniest and most clever of Michelle's friends, it might surprise fans to know that the character is actually not in that many episodes of the popular sitcom.

Smollett co-starred with actors Bow Wow and Brandon T Jackson in the 2005 skater movie Roll Bounce. In 2006, she joined the film Gridiron Gang. Actor Jurnee Smollett has been gracing our TV screens since she was a tiny child star, and now she's grown into a bonafide celebrity. You had men and women from all walks of life and all races working together. Those are the moments when we really achieve great change in our nation. I think there's so much we can gain from looking back on this. That spirit of saying, 'You know, this is an unjust law.' That's the spirit that has always propelled our country to be better.

But the show brought a lot of new experiences for Smollett too — namely stunts. Smollett’s been in the game for over three decades and she chooses her roles with intention. As a biracial child who grew up in the South, she understands the power of storytelling, specifically as it relates to the African American experience. Ironically, Smollett recently revealed that the casting crew was not looking for an actor of color for the coveted role.
Truly, one of the great joys of my professional career has been playing Black Canary and to see the response from the fans online and engaging on Twitter. They are a massive reason why I am where I am, and any excitement I have about continuing on the Black Canary trajectory, it’s being made possible because of the fans. Then, when I met with Joseph Kosinski, we had a Zoom, and I was honest with him about my thoughts and things that I would want to do to flesh out Lizzy and bring her to life. The session essentially became a brainstorming meeting, and after that Zoom, I was like, “I wanna work with Joe.” I really bought into his vision of the film and his spirit of collaboration.

In the pilot, [that strength] comes out in the moment where she has to protect her brother, but it's a strength that is brewing inside of her that will take her far—especially in the first season. She eventually becomes someone she never thought she could be. And I just felt like I also understood her loneliness and the fact that she doesn't fit in anywhere on the plantation. She feels like an outsider and envies the field hands, because at least they have some kind of camaraderie, some sense of unity, some sense of family. We shot this in the middle of 2020 and the COVID pandemic. It was one of the first films that Netflix put back into production.

” You know and so I think in “Dolores,” I really connected to that struggle, of, you know, raising a family by yourself, being the breadwinner. Smollett brought some of her old sassiness back in the role of Letitia Lewis, but being Leti wasn't always easy for her. In fact, playing Leti was so impactful for Smollett that she told Vogue that when she finished filming the show, she cut her hair off to "purge herself of Leti." By the time she reached her 30s, Jurnee Smollett had firmly established herself in Hollywood, and she continues to take risks both with her film and television roles, as well as with her image.
In probably her biggest movie role to date, Jurnee Smollett took on the role of Dinah/Black Canary in the 2020 DC Comics film "Birds of Prey." Her character was sultry, but tough as nails, and Smollett stunned in the film. "My mom instilled us with such a healthy relationship with our hair," Smollett told Vogue in 2020. "She reminded us that all hair is beautiful and never allowed us to use the term good hair. If you've got hair, you've got good hair."

AmoMama creates engaging, meaningful content for women. We collect and tell stories of people from all around the world. Jurnee's brother Jussie remembers his sister’s modeling and acting talent shining from when they were pretty young. “At a year old, she was like a mix of Diana Ross and Elizabeth Taylor.

But, at the end of the day, it's an honor and a privilege to be able to bring a voice to their stories. The actress tells The Hollywood Reporter about working with director Joseph Kosinski to give her character "guilt and shame," and recalls Samuel L. Jackson's unique advice about her DC superhero. If you want to visit the house that was used for the exterior shots of the Tanner family home you will need to go to 1709 Broderick Street. Did you know that Jeff Franklin, the creator of Full and Fuller House, purchased the house?
Smollett once again did her own stunts, allowing some of her previous acting experiences to enhance her performance. The gig ended up being something of a turning point at that time in her career. The series which ran from 2010 to 2011, was short-lived, and she spent the next few years on various projects including TV shows "The Mob Doctor" and "Do Not Harm," but nothing really stuck during that time. "We got spoiled with 'Friday Night Lights,'" she said to BuzzFeed.
So blood memory is not just about the trauma. Once I read the script I texted the director, Anthony Hemingway, who I had worked with on True Blood, and started campaigning for the role. I was like, 'Look, there is no one else out there who could do this as well as me.' And I sent him a whole book of reasons why I would kill it.
While some remember her from her days in the show, most of us met Jurnee in other shows and loved her just as much. From 2009 to 2011, Jurnee Smollett starred as a series regular on the popular television show "Friday Night Lights." She was a full-fledged adult by then, and had changed her look quite a bit. She wore her famous curls looser and often tried out bolder makeup applications, further separating herself from her child star image.
But we were parentified children a bit, too. My oldest brother was born in Lefrak City, the high rises in [Queens] New York, their version of a Cabrini-Green. That’s what excited me so much about this film, being able to see Black childhood onscreen and the innocence and creativity of it. Their innocence isn’t tampered with yet.
